Is PEPPOL a new driving force for EDI in Europe? Are EDI providers threatened?Ger Clancy, IBM Strategic Outsourcing - Business Development and Top Contributor of our LinkedIN group posted this question and added that: “Now that the EU is getting ready to mandate the use of standardised eProcurement in Europe with PEPPOL. How do you see the future development of the EDI market?”

He has the feeling that there is a lot of vested interest amongst traditional EDI providers themselves against standardization: it suits them just fine that there have been borders in place till now, and that there have been few providers able to reach across those borders. He can imagine that many customers are blissfully unaware of PEPPOL, as their providers are fearful that standardisation will make these customers mobile, and want to keep their golden geese to themselves as long as possible.

So what do you think. Does Ger Clancy have a point here?
