Belgian e-invoicing legislation takes a leap forward

Go Red Devils! We hope that Belgian e-invoicing advances as majorly as their national football team. The recently approved draft proposal that aims to further simplify electronic invoicing and archiving for paper and electronic invoices puts us in an optimistic mood. The Belgians implement European Directive 2010/45/EU of 13 July 2010 with this new law. You know, the one that simplifies the VAT rules on invoicing.

Positive incentive for e-invoicing adoption rate

Since the introduction of e-invoicing into Belgian legislation, the adoption rate has remained rather slow. There are many reasons, but one of the main ones is that the technological and security requirements are perceived as complex. This leads to confusion and uncertainty about legal compliance for e-invoices in general and also about archiving of paper and electronic invoices. This new law should take away some of these problems and hopefully increase the adoption rate of e-invoicing in Belgium. Let’s just hope that the Belgian federal parliament does not amend it in the meantime.
