PIAC estimated the total is "conservatively" between $495 million and $734 million, plus taxes. Some $102 million in fees are being paid by low-income Canadians and seniors who don't have Internet access at home or don't use computers!
PIAC was pleased when the federal government pledged to ban the practice of charging for paper bills, first in its throne speech last October and then again this February in releasing its budget.
A Danish Energy provider decided to test with a population of new customers whether switching to paper invoices would improve the speed of payment. It also wanted to know whether digital invoices were cheaper than physical mail in regard to overall operational costs.
Shockingly it found out that sending invoices via e-mail actually increased their overall costs: it cost the company $3.25 per customer to get paid by paper invoice and $5.75 per customer billed by e-mail.

The study "The Electronic Invoice in Spain 2012-2013" also confirms that 35% of all Spanish companies use e-invoicing. From 2012 to 2013 the absolute amount of companies grew from 120.000 to a total of 130.000. This is all based on a new study from Sage Pay. And was presented as a foot note alongside the main finding. The study from Sage Pay primarily discovered that SME businesses in the UK as a whole are currently owed more than £55 billion in unpaid or outstanding invoices. The average SME is owed £11,358, with one in five owed over £30,000.Read More
Over 20 leading U.S. companies have removed their "anti-paper" green claims, used to promote electronic billing and other e-services as a more environmentally-friendly solution than paper. These companies are primarily top Fortune 500 organizations in the banking, utilities and telecommunications sectors.
The removals follows on an educational campaign by Two Sides U.S. to correct greenwashing related to print and paper products.
