The European Commission organised an informal meeting in Brussels last October in order to get a clear picture about the current status, progress and implications of the convergence of the Universal Business Language (UBL) standard into standards developed by UN/CEFACT. A point of discussion was whether or not any actions – in addition to the ongoing convergence – needed to be taken.
Some essential elements of this meeting were that:
- Their common interests exist in a combined UBL and UN/CEFACT standard and development.
- There is an agreement to converge the activities of both UBL and UN/CEFACT.
- Future development of UBL (not being a development for maintenance purposes) will be integrated
into the various UN/CEFACT standardisation and development activities.
- The Expert Group on e-Invoicing of the European Commission takes the agreement to converge the
activities of both UBL and UN/CEFACT, as a given and prefers to rely on its outcome as part of its
goals to prepare a European e-Invoicing Framework.
