The Dutch project on e-Invoicing by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (EZ) started in 2008. The aim of this project was to introduce electronic invoicing to the government. Concerned citizens wonder if e-invoicing does take up more energy than paper invoices.
.
Several international studies have been set up to take a closer look at the use of energy by e-invoicing. The fact that in other countries a significant beneficial effect is found for e-billing does not mean that this automatically counts for the Netherlands.
.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs has asked TNO to make a calculation of direct and indirect impacts on energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This calculation is made in a transition situation from a chain with 100% of paper invoices to a chain with 100% e-invoices. Analysis shows that paper invoices use up nearly two times more energy and 50% more CO2 emissions than digital invoices.
